Horoscope bhava / Houses details in vedic astrology

An individual’s horoscope is divided into 12 Bhavas or houses. Based on the way the planets and rashis are placed from lagna point of view, a person’s  birth chart is analyzed which helps us understand the various aspects and events of one’s life.



  1. Lagnasthan, Tanur Bhava (Sun)- It literally translates to "the house of the body". It signifies the birth, beginning of life, personality, personal features, looks, body, character and temperament, individuality, self consciousness and constitution in general. This is one of the most important and auspicious house in the horoscope. In the physical body, this bhava governs the head which includes the brain and face.
  2. Dhanasthan, Dhana Bhava (Jupiter, Mercury)- This house signifies the wealth and prosperity of a person. This bhava shows what a person acquires by individual effort and the degree of prosperity which he will enjoy with all the possessions of extrinsic value bonds, stocks, cash and bank balance etc. In the physical body, this bhava governs the face, mouth, throat, neck, thyroid gland, right eye, teeth, tongue, nose and nails.
  3. Parakramsthan, Bhatru Bhava (Mars, Mercury)- This house represents a person’s younger siblings, all cousins, subordinates and even neighbours. It indicates the property of mind, its strength and weakness, thought power, mental interest and inclination, courage and valor.The parts of the body ruled by the third house are right ear, hands, arms and fingers, shoulder blade and collarbone.
  4. Sukhasthan, Matru Bhava (Moon) - This house represents mother, one’s roots, residence, domestic affairs, acquiring of tangible assets and property like land, building, mines, farms and vehicles, happiness, learning and general condition of a person in the later part of his life. Possessions such as fields, farms, mines, real estate, gardens, buildings, dwellings, antiquities, vehicles are influenced by this house. The fourth house may be taken to indicate school and college education of a person. The parts of the body ruled by the fourth house are chest, breasts and lungs.
  5. Putrasthan, Putra Bhava (Jupiter)- This house rules a person's creativity, children, poorva punya or virtuous act done in past lives, romance, love affairs, hobbies, games and sports. This is the house of creativity and includes everything one creates including progeny. It also denotes whether one will have children or not. The part of the body ruled by the fifth house is the heart, upper and middle part of the spinal cord.
  6. Shatru sthana, Shatru Bhava (Mars, Saturn)- This house governs a person's health and sickness, diet, debt, labor, service, work, daily routine, enemies, oppositions, maternal uncles and aunts, sin, wicked act and fear. This house also represents the quality of one’s work or job they perform. And also a person’s capacity to overcome obstacles. The parts of the body governed by the sixth house are the kidneys, pancreas, stomach and digestion process.
  7. Bharyasthan, Kalatra Bhava (Venus, Jupiter)- This house rules one's relationships and partnerships, marriage, wife or husband, legal bondage, lawsuits, divorce, agreements, contracts etc. Besides the life partner, the partner in business and the degree of success achieved through such partnership is also shown by this house. It is said this house indicates all those with whom the native transacts or deals in any manner. The parts of the body ruled by the seventh house are reproduction and genital organs.
  8. Mrutyusthan, Ayur Bhava (Saturn)- This house governs a person's longevity, defeat, insult, sorrow, scandal, obstacles, impediment, transformation, regeneration, sexuality, unearned money, hidden matters and also conveys the type of death. This house determines the ultimate meaning of one’s life. The parts of the body ruled by the eighth house are the reproductive system, prostate gland and the colon.
  9. Bhagyasthan, Bhagya Bhava (Jupiter)- This is the house of dharma, righteousness, moral ethics, grandchildren, successful long travels, wisdom, higher knowledge, religious and philosophical beliefs, spiritual initiation and inclination. This is considered the house of good luck and prosperity. The parts of the body ruled by the ninth house are the thighs and hip.
  10. Pitrusthan, Karma Bhava (Mercury, Jupiter, Sun)- This house represents our actions and the main purpose of our life. It indicates one’s public status, popularity, honor, community power, prestige, reputation, and professional career. The parts of the body ruled by the tenth house are the gallbladder and the knees.
  11. Labhasthan, Labha Bhava (Jupiter)- This is house is otherwise called as the house of gain. It is related to the aspirations, desires, abundance, money, income and acquisitions. It is also related to friends, and one’s attitude towards society. The parts of the body ruled by the eleventh house are calves and ankles.
  12. Vyayasthan, Vyaya Bhava (Saturn, Ketu)This house rules a person's bondage, confinement, expenses, loss, poverty, misery, detachment, surrender and renouncing. This house shows final liberation from the chain of births and deaths and one’s merger with the divine and the future state of his existence. The parts of the body ruled by the twelfth house are the feet.

The grouping of the twelve bhavas as KENDRAS,CADENTS and SUCCEDENTS is most important.
1st,4th,7th & 10th houses are called Kendras
2nd,5th,8th & 11th are called Cadents and
3rd,6th,9th & 12th are Succedents.
